O’Leary knows exactly what it takes – he launched his first company from his basement with a $10,000 loan from his mother; just a few years later, he sold it for more than $4 billion. And, he has over 20 years of experience investing in private companies and riding the transition from startup through geometric growth to managing a multi-million dollar enterprise. |
As the son of a travelling international business expert, Kevin O’Leary was educated in Cambodia, Cyprus, Tunisia, Ethiopia, France and Switzerland. After completing his MBA in 1980 at The Richard Ivey School of Business – where he serves as a board member – he founded Special Event Television, an independent production company that produced original sports programming. In 1986 he founded SoftKey Software Products, the first software company to apply the principles of consumer goods marketing to the software industry; Mattel acquired the company $4.2 billion in 1999.
In 2003, O’Leary co-founded Storage Now, a leading developer of climate-controlled storage facilities; in 2007 the company was acquired by In Storage REIT for $110 million. In 2007, he became a founding investor and director of Boston-based Stream Global Services Inc., an international business outsourcing company. He’s also the chairman of O’Shares Investments, the founder and chief sommelier of O’Leary Fine Wines, and a regular contributor on ABC, CNBC and CTV.
